She pulled up short. Becky thumped into her side but didn’t utter a word of protest.

To the left, a head peeked around a thick trunk. Long jaws, complete with overlapping fangs that overshadowed thin lips, jutted forward. Green saliva dripped down the creature’s chin. It didn’t move.

Neither did Kat. Or Becky.

Why the creature didn’t charge forward to seize easy prey puzzled Kat. As did the fact that the eyes failed to shift in any way. Once she had a moment to digest what she saw, she noted that each pupil had a filmy quality. Before she could process what that meant, the creature inhaled loudly. As its entire head lifted, it drew in a breath through oversized nostrils then took a step in Kat’s direction.

Turning, she fled, tugging Becky with her. Thumping steps sounded behind her, and these were almost immediately joined by another set.

They separated to find us easier. She wasn’t too pleased with her assessment. The beasts were too clever by far. And yet, why hadn’t they caught their prey?

Areth’s dungeon was a place Glaz never expected to be. Now a resident of the dismal location, he could see no method of escape. Aside from rusted bars, the cell had no weaknesses to be exploited. There was no window or furniture. The space was blank except for a floor covered in grime, damp stone walls, and Savu’s limp and lifeless form. Groans and pleas came from cells past his view.

Though there was water, it had a greenish tinge. No food had been offered. The cell was icy cold. Weak from hunger and dizzy from dehydration, Glaz understood his situation was dire.

Savu had yet to wake. Bruises marked his temple and swelling made one eye nearly invisible. Crusted blood coated his skin from head to toe.

Poor Savu. This is my fault.

The situation was becoming desperate.

Leda tossed another blanket down the staircase. At the bottom, Minode caught it. Adaim came into view a moment later, his head craned upward. “Are there more?” he asked, hope in his tone.

She shook her head as she trudged down the stairs, her tread heavy.

“I thought I had more…” his voice trailed away as he sank into a chair, his hand cushioning his bent head.

Leda stared in his direction, wanting to drop into a seat beside him and mimic his position. She knew the source of his despondency. It haunted her night and day. As more and more people sought shelter in the Painter’s Valley, bedding, food, and medicine became scarce. Though the residents of the village were charitable, houses could only fit so many. Resources could only stretch so far. They needed more supplies. Yet attaining them was a tricky endeavor. The safer southern routes were guarded by Coalition men hoping to catch refugees. Snow bears prowled the northern passes. To the west lay the most hazardous mountain peaks, as well as the treacherous province of Lorthlin.

Leaving to find resources was a risky venture. Yet people still flowed into the Painter’s Valley. With the main routes to the village blocked off, those fleeing the Coalition were forced to take more perilous paths. Being one of the few who was both willing and able to leave the security of the valley to hunt for food, Leda often stumbled upon the corpses of those who didn’t survive the journey. As far as she could tell, some died from animal attacks. Others succumbed to either exhaustion or starvation.
